Happy Independence Day! 🇵🇭
Every June 12, Filipino families celebrate Araw ng Kalayaan, or Philippine Independence Day. It is the day we remember how Filipinos declared freedom from Spanish rule in 1898.
For adults, Independence Day may bring to mind history, heroes, flags, ceremonies, and national pride. But for young children, especially preschoolers, the idea of “independence” can feel too big or abstract.
So how do you explain Philippine Independence Day to a 3-year-old, 4-year-old, or early grade school child?
The good news is you do not need a long history lesson. With simple stories, songs, coloring pages, and hands-on activities, kids can begin to understand love for country in a way that feels meaningful to them.
Looking for a simple activity to go with this lesson? We prepared free Philippine Independence Day worksheets for kids ages 3–8, including coloring, tracing, and Filipino word activities for Araw ng Kalayaan.
What Is Araw ng Kalayaan?
For young children, you can explain it simply:
Araw ng Kalayaan is like our country’s birthday.
On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared that the Philippines was free from Spanish colonial rule. This happened in Kawit, Cavite. On that day, the Philippine flag was waved in public, and our national anthem was played.
For preschool and early grade school children, you can say:
“Long ago, brave Filipinos helped our country become free. Because of them, we are proudly Filipino today.”
This gives children a simple and gentle way to understand Independence Day without overwhelming them.
5 Easy Philippine Independence Day Activities for Kids
1. Color the Philippine Flag

A Philippine flag coloring activity is one of the easiest ways to introduce Independence Day to young children.
Teach your child the colors of the flag:
Blue
Red
White
Yellow sun and stars
As they color, you can briefly explain that the flag is a symbol of our country. For preschoolers, this activity also helps develop fine motor skills, color recognition, and focus.
2. Listen to Lupang Hinirang Together
You do not need to ask your child to memorize the national anthem right away. Start by simply listening to Lupang Hinirang together.
While listening, point out Filipino words they may recognize, such as:
lupa — land
bayan — country
kalayaan — freedom
This is a gentle way to introduce Filipino vocabulary while helping children feel connected to our national song.
3. Tell a Short Hero Story
Choose one or two Filipino heroes and tell a very short, age-appropriate story.
You can introduce:
Emilio Aguinaldo — helped lead the declaration of Philippine independence
Jose Rizal — used writing to inspire Filipinos
Gabriela Silang — showed bravery and reminds us that women can be heroes too
After the story, ask your child:
“If you were a hero, what would you do to help our country?”
This helps children connect the idea of heroism to kindness, courage, and helping others.
4. Cook a Filipino Dish Together

Food is a beautiful way to celebrate Filipino culture.
Let your child help prepare a simple Filipino dish such as:
adobo
sinigang
arroz caldo
pancit
puto
While cooking or eating, you can say:
“This is Filipino food. It is part of our culture and who we are.”
Even simple moments like this help children feel proud of their identity.
5. Make a “Salamat, Bayani!” Thank-You Card
For children who are starting to draw or write, invite them to make a Salamat, Bayani! card.
They can make a card for someone they think is a hero, such as:
a parent
grandparent
teacher
doctor
community helper
older sibling
This activity helps children understand that heroes are not only people from history. Heroes can also be the people who love, guide, protect, and help us every day.
Why These Independence Day Activities Matter
These simple activities do more than teach history.
They help children build:
Filipino identity
cultural pride
love for country
appreciation for heroes
early Filipino literacy skills
When children color the flag, hear Filipino words, listen to hero stories, and celebrate Filipino food, they begin to understand what it means to be Filipino in a way that feels real and personal.
And if your child is learning Filipino letters, words, and stories at home, you are already helping keep our language and culture alive.
That is also a form of pagmamahal sa bayan.
