So how do you explain Philippine Independence Day to a 3-year-old, 4-year-old, or early grade school child?

The good news is you do not need a long history lesson. With simple stories, songs, coloring pages, and hands-on activities, kids can begin to understand love for country in a way that feels meaningful to them.

What Is Araw ng Kalayaan?

For young children, you can explain it simply:

Araw ng Kalayaan is like our country’s birthday.

On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared that the Philippines was free from Spanish colonial rule. This happened in Kawit, Cavite. On that day, the Philippine flag was waved in public, and our national anthem was played.

For preschool and early grade school children, you can say:

“Long ago, brave Filipinos helped our country become free. Because of them, we are proudly Filipino today.”

This gives children a simple and gentle way to understand Independence Day without overwhelming them.

5 Easy Philippine Independence Day Activities for Kids

1. Color the Philippine Flag

A Philippine flag coloring activity is one of the easiest ways to introduce Independence Day to young children.

Teach your child the colors of the flag:

• Blue

• Yellow sun and stars

Choose one or two Filipino heroes and tell a very short, age-appropriate story.

• Emilio Aguinaldo — helped lead the declaration of Philippine independence

• Jose Rizal — used writing to inspire Filipinos

• Gabriela Silang — showed bravery and reminds us that women can be heroes too

After the story, ask your child:

“If you were a hero, what would you do to help our country?”

This helps children connect the idea of heroism to kindness, courage, and helping others.

4. Cook a Filipino Dish Together

Make turon together! Let your child help wrap the banana, then talk about how this sweet snack is part of Filipino culture.

Food is a beautiful way to celebrate Filipino culture.

Let your child help prepare a simple Filipino dish such as:

• sinigang

• arroz caldo

• pancit

• puto

While cooking or eating, you can say:

“This is Filipino food. It is part of our culture and who we are.”

Even simple moments like this help children feel proud of their identity.

5. Make a “Salamat, Bayani!” Thank-You Card

For children who are starting to draw or write, invite them to make a Salamat, Bayani! card.

They can make a card for someone they think is a hero, such as:

• a parent

• grandparent

• teacher

• doctor

• community helper
